MedPath students had the incredible opportunity to visit UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh last week!

Students participated in round-robin table discussions with professionals representing eight different careers within the medical field, gaining valuable insight into what it truly means to work in healthcare. They then went on an inspiring tour of the hospital, seeing medicine in action.

The best stop of the day, however, was meeting Erie's very own little superhero, Gio. His strength, courage, and miraculous journey to recovery touched every single one of us. Gio reminded the students why they are choosing to pursue careers in medicine, to bring hope and healing to others.

Everyone left UPMC feeling inspired, grateful, and more motivated than ever to make a difference! #Prep #MedPath #GioStrong ⚕️🏥

Yesterday, our students had the incredible opportunity to hear from Mary Eighmy, a pediatric physical therapist from Shriners Children's Erie!

Before becoming a PT, she was a proud member of the Villa Maria Class of 2010 leaving VMA and pursuing her dream as a professional ballerina. This eventually inspired her to help others recover from injuries and reach their goals. Now, she works with young athletes and kids to help them return to the activities they love. She has even traveled with the U.S. Olympic Team!

She shared valuable insights about the education required to become a physical therapist, the cutting-edge motion analysis technology used at Shriners, and the importance of empathy, patience, and maintaining an “I can” attitude, skills that can’t be taught in a classroom.

Her advice to students was powerful:

• Don’t take the easy way out in school.
• Make choices that build your resume and set you up for success.
• Be financially savvy—consider tuition costs, salary potential, and cost of living.
• Choose a career with a work-life balance that fits you.
• And most of all, find the beautiful moments during your educational journey.

Thank you, Mary, for inspiring our students to dream big, work hard, and think smart! #MedPath #PhysicalTherapy ⚕️
