Science
The members of the Cathedral Prep Science Department foster the development of scientific literacy in our students and prepare them for study at the collegiate level. We act as guides for our students, helping them to develop critical-thinking and problem-solving skills that are essential for success in our quickly advancing, technology-driven society. Therefore, we provide numerous types of learning experiences ranging from traditional methods to immersive, hands-on experiences, collegiate-level labs, field trips, and guest speakers, just to cite a few.
Students are consistently challenged to ensure that they are well prepared for their college years. Students will develop personal accountability, reading comprehension, note-taking and study skills, personal organization, interpersonal relationships, and laboratory skills, in addition to the specific content being addressed in each course.
We are also on the cutting edge of classroom technology. Our students use a multitude of technologies, and as a result, our students are more familiar and experienced with the types of tools used in the different science disciplines.
Some technology highlights:
A one-to-one student iPad program that is integrated with our courses
30 mobile laptop PCs dedicated for data measurement and analysis
An impressive array of electronic probes, sensors, and other measurement equipment
Fully equipped and stocked Physics, Biology, Chemistry
.and Integrated Science laboratories as well as an auxiliary instrumentation laboratory, all of which are comparable to college labs
Our department members provide a firm foundation in the three main disciplines of science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Additionally, we offer rigorous and relevant science electives, including Environmental Science and four AP courses. This prepares our graduates to pursue and excel in a broad spectrum of STEM (Science Technology Engineering & Mathematics) fields. Job outlook and earnings are bright and continue to outpace non-STEM jobs. https://www.bls.gov/emp/tables/stem-employment.htm
