Cathedral Preparatory School and Villa Maria Academy seeks Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs
Posted 04/20/2018 04:20PM

As you likely know, Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy form a very unique school. Beginning back in 2009, Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy, which were separate and distinct schools at the time, began a merger process to bring the two schools together as one. The legal merger process was completed on July 1, 2010 at which time Prep and Villa officially and legally became a co-institutional school: one school with two campuses. It also gained the new corporate name of Erie Catholic Preparatory School (although we continue to use the more familiar names of Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy.) As a result, Prep and Villa share a common mission statement with one Board of Directors and administration overseeing both campuses. Although the legal merger is complete, the other aspects of the merger have been an ongoing process that has continued to this very day. This has included developing a common curriculum, grading system, graduation requirements, academic standards, schedules, and many other areas. Much has been accomplished over these past nine years due to the diligent and hard work of the Board of Directors, faculty, staff and administration in order to provide the same academic preparation and opportunities for all of our Prep and Villa students. However, there is still work to be done to address lingering differences that are impeding the ability to reach the level of unity that is envisioned for the school. In order to address more effectively the differences between Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy, a change is being made to the administrative structure of the school. What this means is that effective the next school year, the school will move from having two Principals (one at each campus) to having one position, which will most likely be known as the Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs, which will oversee both campuses and report directly to the President. This position will be tasked with unifying Prep and Villa on a greater level, while still reflecting our identity of offering single-sex education. Strong and loyal "Assistant Vice-Presidents" on each campus would deal with student discipline and activities and assist the Vice-President with implementing academic strategies and conducting classroom observations and teacher evaluations, while also implementing the goals and objectives of the Vice-President and President especially in terms of curriculum. This change in administrative structure will help to ensure more consistency in the academic programs and the curriculum at Prep and Villa. At the same time, we have worked to preserve the beloved traditions that make each campus special and distinctive and which reflect each campus' heritage – as long as those traditions do not impede the ability of the school to be unified and to offer a superior education. The school's faculty, staff and administration have been informed of this change. We will now begin a national search to accept applications for the Vice-President and Assistant Vice-President positions. It is our goal to attract many viable applicants for these positions and then to select the very best candidates to assume the responsibilities of each position. Those successful candidates will then begin the process of being the school's effective academic leaders who will unify Prep and Villa and ensure that our academic programs are the best in the area bar none. We will keep you posted with the eventual announcement of the successful candidates for these important leadership positions in our school. It is our desire to have the best people in place to ensure that both Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy as one school will continue and further enhance its long-standing tradition of excellence through these changes. Please pray for the success of this process.

Sincerely, Fr. Scott W. Jabo President
