Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs

VICE-PRESIDENT OF ACADEMICS AND STUDENT AFFAIRS FOR CATHEDRAL PREP AND VILLA MARIA ACADEMY

The Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs is the educational leader of both Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy, working closely with and reporting directly to the President. The Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs is directly responsible for the administration, operation and educational development of the academic, co-curricular and formational programs of the school, as well as the planning, coordination and execution of the school’s educational policy. The Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs is charged with upholding and building up the co-institutional characteristic of Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy (“one school, two campuses”) by working to unify the school while also upholding and respecting the value of and the school’s commitment to single-gender education. The Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs ensures that, as much as possible and practical, all Prep and Villa students are given the same educational opportunities in terms of course offerings and programs, including college credit-earning courses through Gannon University and other institutions of higher learning. The Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs provides leadership for mission to all of the school’s constituents including faculty, staff, students, parents and the community at large. The Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs also serves as a member of the Senior Administration to ensure the effective operation of the school.

Essential Job Functions

Mission and Catholic Identity:

  • Ensure that the Catholic identity and mission of the school is developed, supported and nurtured through the school’s academic, extra- and co-curricular programs as well as through the school’s policies and procedures;
  • Ensure that all faculty and support staff integrate the school’s Catholic identity and mission throughout the school’s educational and extra- and co-curricular programs, activities, policies and procedures;
  • Oversee and ensure the hiring of all faculty and support staff, based on competency, certification and adherence to the school’s Catholic identity and mission in all educational program areas and departments, subject to final approval by the President;
  • Unify Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy so that it reflects its co-institutional identity as “one school, two campuses.”

Student Life and Academic Affairs:

  • Ensure that the school’s academic standards exceed, or at least meet, state standards;
  • Ensure the overall integrity and relevance of the school’s academic, formational and co-curricular programs, including clubs and activities, service projects, assemblies and presentations;
  • Work closely with the Assistant Vice-President in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the curriculum, assisted by the department chairs;
  • Ensure that Prep and Villa students are equally afforded the same academic opportunities and offerings, including college credit-earning courses from Gannon University and other institutions of higher learning;
  • Receive minutes from regular department meetings;
  • Work closely with the Assistant Vice-President in the appointment and formation of department chairs;
  • Designate teaching and other professional responsibilities as the needs of the school require;
  • With the Assistant Vice-President, review and modify as needed the student discipline program to ensure consistency with the Catholic nature, the school’s mission, and the standards of the school and ensure that the student discipline policy is adhered to and enforced consistently;
  • Serve as final appeal regarding probations, suspensions and dismissals of students upon advice of the Assistant Vice-President;
  • Maintain an active presence at school events with shared proctoring responsibilities.

Administration:

  • Implement policies with regards to academics, student affairs and activities, athletics;
  • Provide leadership to academic faculty and staff and coordinate weekly and monthly faculty meetings;
  • Assist the President and Board in the development of short- and long-range plans;
  • Review and update as needed the faculty handbook, with the approval of the President;
  • Assist and support the recruitment and admission of students, including the support of the expansion of the 8th grade honors program and upholding the highest quality of the program;
  • Work with the Director of Enrollment in the process of determining the acceptance of student applicants;
  • Attend all regular bimonthly Board of Directors meetings;
  • Ensure compliance with State and Diocesan policies where applicable in the operation of the school;
  • Maintain accreditation and/or membership of the school by the appropriate agencies, including Middle States and NCEA.

Supervisory and Support Duties:

  • Observe and evaluate all faculty, Guidance staff, the Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs’ Administrative Assistant(s), and any other support staff that report to the Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs;
  • With the President, sign all faculty contracts;

School Budget:

  • Assist the Chief Financial Officer with the development of the annual budget and administer the budget in a fiscally responsible manner;
  • Review, approve and monitor budgets for all academic departments and co- and extra-curricular areas;
  • Direct the preparation of the budget for the Vice-President of Academics and Student Affairs’ office.

Facilities:

  • Work with the President to ensure that the operation of school facilities supports the school’s programs;
  • Make recommendations to the President for building modifications and use policies to better facilitate academic programs and also to ensure the safety and welfare of students, faculty and staff.

Communications and Public Relations:

  • Maintain good communications and relationships with all stakeholders of the school;
  • Oversee the timely communication of school information to faculty, staff, students and parents;
  • Oversee the completion of all official Diocesan, state and other necessary and official paperwork and documentation.
  • Represent the school to the parent community and the alumni/ae;
  • Prepare end-of-year debriefing sessions with the school’s senior administration and Board of Directors;
  • Assist the President in the communication of short and long-range plans to the school community;
  • Develop the school calendar for approval by the President.

Professional Organizations and Affiliations:

  • Take part in personal, as well as professional development activities;
  • Participate in professional organizations;
  • Attend meetings conducted by the Catholic Schools Office for Diocesan high school principals.

Requirements (Education, Experience, Required/Preferred Skills)

  • A practicing Catholic in good standing and able to submit a Pastor Recommendation Form by his/her pastor.
  • Possess a current and active Administrative Level II Certification from the Pennsylvania Department of Education, or be willing and able to obtain this certification within three years.
  • Preferable several years of teaching and administrative experience in secondary education, with an emphasis in instructional leadership, teacher supervision and effective instruction.
  • Demonstrated success in providing visionary, strong and dynamic leadership in educational programming.
  • Able to be an effective unifying leader and figure for Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy.
  • A basic understanding of school financial management.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in communicating with alumni, parents, administrators, faculty, staff, students and other school constituents.
  • Expertise in curriculum planning and development, with an understanding of current trends in secondary education, exposure to various successful models and the ability to implement a curriculum that includes creative scheduling, out-of-class learning, STREAM and innovative community educational partnerships to support student learning and progress.
  • Sensitivity to socially marginalized groups, students and faculty in vulnerable circumstances.
  • A commitment to self-reflection, continuous improvement, and openness to regularly discern.
  • A clear understanding of the research and needs with respect to single-gender educational settings.
  • A commitment to the concept of hiring to support the school’s Catholic identity and the school’s mission.

Marketing and Advancement Manager: (Mother Teresa Academy Campus)

The Mother Teresa Academy Marketing and Advancement Manager will report to the Director of Advancement. This position will be responsible for all advancement and marketing responsibilities on the Mother Teresa Academy campus.

Responsibilities:

  • Identify, research, cultivate, solicit, and steward major gift prospects
  • Assist the Director of Advancement with the strategy and implementation of various projects that involve Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy
  • Oversee and manage all fund-raising activity
  • Manage all tax credit programs
  • Design and publish Annual Report
  • Update website and social media accounts
  • Plan constituent relations programs
  • Responsible for all donor stewardship efforts
  • Prepare grant proposals in order to secure outside funding
  • The candidate will be responsible for face-to-face and phone solicitations
  • Support the work of other members of the Advancement Office at Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy
  • Performs other job related duties as assigned by Director of Advancement

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing, public relations or related field
  • 2-3 years of advancement experience
  • Grant writing experience a plus

This position could be a part or full time depending on the best interest of the selected candidate and Mother Teresa Academy.

Math Teacher

Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy has an opening for a fulltime PA certified Math teacher for the 2018-2019 school year, with the primary assignment at Cathedral Prep, which is the all-boys campus. Interested applicants must have the ability to teach all levels of high school mathematics, with a strong emphasis on geometry.

Interested applicants should possess at least a bachelor’s degree and have some classroom teaching experience and should possess at least a PA Instructional I certification (or be willing to obtain it).

Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria Academy is a co-institutional college preparatory Catholic school with students in grades 9-12.
