Cathedral Prep
Campus

As the Cathedral Prep Science Department, we help our students develop critical thinking and problem solving skills that are crucial to excellence in a quickly advancing, technology driven world. We are also on the cutting edge of classroom technology. Our students constantly use some of the best classroom technology on the market today. Because of this, they are more familiar and experienced with the technological parts of the world they will be immersed in. To provide this experience, we frequently use:

  • A one-to-one student iPad program that is integrated with our courses through the use of several applications that are specifically designed to explore different areas or situations in science including our laboratory experiments.
  • 30 mobile laptop PCs dedicated for data measurement and analysis
  • An impressive array of electronic probes, sensors, and other measurement equipment that interface seamlessly with our science PC's.
  • Fully equipped Physics, Biology, Chemistry and Integrated Science Laboratories and an auxiliary instrumentation laboratory. All of which are comparable to college labs.

Our department vigorously focuses on building a firm foundation in the three main disciplines of science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Additionally, we offer rigorous and relevant science electives including Environmental Science and 4 AP courses. This readies our graduates to pursue and excel in a broad spectrum of STEM fields as statistics have repeatedly shown 60-65% of our students pursue Science or Science-related degrees. A graph below shows that almost 75 of this recent graduating class has chosen a STEM field.

Villa Maria Academy Campus

The goal of the Villa Maria Academy science department is to expose students to a variety of sciences and science careers to widen their appreciation of the world around them. We find it important to have hands on experiences and real life examples to further the understanding of what the scientific world entails. We strive to push our students in all aspects in order to prepare them for their college years including note taking skills, laboratory skills, application of theories, and analysis of scientific principles. Integrated Science, Biology, Chemistry, and a fourth year of science of the student’s choice is the pathway our students take. Honors and academic levels are offered for all of our core courses and also for most of our electives. We also offer AP level electives.

REQUIREMENTS: 4 Science credits

Our department vigorously focuses on building a firm foundation in the three main disciplines of science: Biology, Chemistry and Physics. This readies our graduates to pursue and excel in a broad spectrum of Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) fields as statistics show more than half of our students pursued Science or Math-related degrees this year. A graph below shows the details.
