WHAT IS STUDENT COUNCIL?

 STUDENT COUNCIL is an effective educational instrument.  In its beginning the idea might have been to form a “mock government,” but the functioning Council has evolved into a unique agency for genuine learning far beyond the basic concepts of civics.  The idea requires individual commitment, individual involvement—the living, central arena of the student world. 

Student Council is a group of elected citizens in a school who meet together regularly to:

PROMOTE CITIZENSHIP:

Þ    By supporting and further developing democracy as a way of life;

Þ    By involving students in meaningful, purpose-oriented activities;

Þ    By helping each student develop a sincere regard for law and order appropriate to a democratic society;

Þ    By leading each individual in developing a sense of personal responsibility and earned self-respect;

Þ    By example through teaching the process and procedures of democracy;

Þ    By encouraging desirable attitudes and the continuous development of valued patterns of citizenship;

Þ    By honestly reflecting and interpreting student view points;

Þ    By providing a forum for student opinions, interests and desire so these may be understood by the entire student body, faculty, administration and community.

 PROMOTE SCHOLARSHIP:

Þ    By contributing to the total educational growth of all students in the school;

Þ    By encouraging high standards of scholarship and positive student involvement in learning and thinking;

Þ    By providing experience in genuine problem-solving procedures;

Þ    By providing for training and experiences in the skill and techniques of good citizenship and leadership to prepare articulate citizens and leaders for a progressing society.

 PROMOTE LEADERSHIP:

Þ    By providing young people with the power and right to speak and, especially, the power, right and privilege of being heard by those in authority;

Þ    By avoiding the commercial or cultural exploitation of students;

Þ    By providing coordination of school-sponsored Student Activities with constant evaluation in terms of the elected purposes;

Þ    By promoting opportunities for leadership among student body members;

Þ    By utilizing the ideas and support of students in solving relevant school problems.

PROMOTE HUMAN RELATIONS:

Þ    By helping create harmonious relationships among faculty, administration, student body and the community;

Þ    By providing organized services to the school in the interest of the general welfare;

Þ    By communicating purposes, activities and the other positive elements of the school life through mass media to the entire community;

Þ    By helping young people further realize the genius and dignity of each individual.

 PROMOTE CULTURAL VALUES:

Þ    By sparking school loyalty, pride, patriotism and individual student development;

Þ    By providing real experiences in group development and human understandings;

Þ    By helping students earn and protect individual rights and responsibilities;

Þ    By selecting projects and activities which seek to achieve purposes which are significant in the life of the school community;

Þ    By giving young people deeper reasons for attending school and the stimulus for developing commitments to worthy goals.

Þ    By helping each student reach maximum education growth and development!

STUDENT COUNCIL is a learning opportunity for involving young people in their own school which in turn develops commitments to citizenship, scholarship, leadership, human relationships and cultural values so our heritage may have even greater worth for the next generation.

                          VMA STUDENT COUNCIL

         PURPOSE:  TO SERVE AS A LIASON BETWEEN                   STUDENTS, ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY.

 STUDENT COUNCIL is not a club.  It includes everyone in the VILLA community.  However, in order that work is effectively and efficiently carried out, a few people are elected to organize, meet, discuss, and decide.  The rest of the community must come to STUDENT COUNCIL to register complaints, concerns, ideas for new projects, and help / provide input with existing and on-going projects.

            VMA STUDENT COUNCIL STRUCTURE:

 Þ    OFFICERS:  are elected in May for the next school year by the entire student body and faculty.

President,Vice-president,Recording Secretary,Treasurer,

Corresponding Secretary & Historian

 Þ    REPRESENTATIVES (upper classes) are elected within class levels in late May by their peers.  (Two representatives for each homeroom and some members at large)

 Þ    FRESHMEN:  representatives are elected in September by their peers.

 REQUIREMENTS for eligibility are:

*     Attend one of two summer leadership workshops

*      Write an essay of approximately 50-100 words

*      Deliver a brief statement , approximately 1-2 minutes, on the qualifications and or desire to serve their peers as a representative at a class meeting

*     Maintain a C average in your courses

*     Observe the rules and guidelines outline in the VMA Handbook

RESPONSIBILITIES OF ALL REPRESENTATIVES:

 Þ    Attend all general meetings (two per month, generally 2nd and fourth Tuesdays, minimum)

Þ    Attend Committee meetings to which you commit yourself

Þ    Report events and happenings to your homeroom promptly (the morning after meetings during homeroom business)

Þ    Participate, as your schedule permits, in Student Council projects and activities.

 STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES are expected to attend all meetings.  It is each member’s responsibility to adjust schedules in order to be present. 

Þ    Absences from school or unexpected illness are the only reasons / excuses to be honored. 

Þ    If you participate in sports, you are permitted absences for scheduled games, but not for practices.  Please discuss with your coaches so they understand when you might be late for a practice and the reasons why.  

Þ    IF there is a problem, we will work it out together.

 With everyone’s cooperation, we will be able to expedite business in short order.  STUDENT COUNCIL is a priority along with your other school commitments.  YOU CHOOSE to be a member of this organization, therefore, it must be considered among you priorities. Meetings are usually held after school twice per month, unless otherwise notified for special occasions.  Monthly schedules are available.  When after school meetings must be scheduled, they begin promptly at 3:00, if possible sooner, and there is never a reason to go beyond 4:00 p.m. (usually 3:30).  Appointments should be scheduled around this commitment unless there is an emergency because it is terribly disruptive.  ALL items on the AGENDA are important to STUDENT COUNCIL and therefore your input is needed for the decision making process.
